But, does the Criterion Collection actually have the best movies? Sure, if you count both The Rock and Armageddon by Michael Bay as two of the best movies ever (and you know how I feel about Michael Bay). And if you look at their library sorted by year, apparently no movies made between 2001 and 2004 are good enough to be made into a Criterion version. And notice how those two movies are bookmarked by Wes Anderson? Not saying he's bad, but come on.

This is reposted from Movies No One Should See. How can I do that? Because I posted it over there, that’s why.
A friend and I were having a discussion yesterday. He was super geeked about The Third Man finally released on Criterion 2-Disc. For those of you who don’t know what Criterion is, it’s a series of movies that have been put on DVD that are classified as the best of the best; if a movie gets the Criterion collection, it’s a great movie. The Criterion movies also have all the extras and special features that make film geeks drool…

Not saying he’s bad, but come on. They don’t enough great movies (or classics such as Jaws and Citizen Kane (which many believe is the best movie ever made…)), and most of the movies they do have, no one but a person who watches foreign films would know half of them.

My friend then suggested this idea: what if there was another collection of DVD’s that rivaled Criterion for the best movies and features. And, after thinking about it, he’s right. So I now present to you the new series of DVD’s cineophilles will love:

The Omega Collection is named for the last letter of the Greek alphabet; for once you have a DVD in the Omega Collection, you don’t need another version (and for those with a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray next gen players, you could mail them in with a few extra dollars and get your next gen DVD). All the special features you could ever want and dream of for each movie, redesigned packaging to make you feel proud that you own that movie, and the best transfer for your viewing pleasure.

I can’t wait for someone to pick this up and turn this into reality. In the meantime, I’ve set up this website (where you’ll see the first one added to the collection tomorrow). If you guys have any suggestions, be happy to hear them.

- Robby
